Differential-algebraic equation systems are systems of equations containing both algebraic variables (for which no derivatives are present) as well as differential variables (for which derivatives are present)[1]. A DAE system is like an implicit ODE system, except that there are additional variables and equations for parameters that are not involved directly in the system dynamics.
DAEs can be solved in ASCEND using the IDA solver, as well as in some case LSODE and DOPRI5.
Yonsoo Chung and Art Westerberg wrote a paper on the topic of index problems in DAE models[2].
