Ben Allan is long-standing contributor to ASCEND, a GSOC mentor, and is still episodically involved in development as his personal time allows.

* refactoring the globals out of ascend C code.
* to make it thread-safe and embeddable.
* to make it easily integrated with other languages, and vice versa.
* to make it easier to liberate models from ascend once they are developed.
