even installing on those paths requires copying certain *.so files to "/usr/lib/python*/dist-packages/" which requires root privileges.<br />

In the section mentioning required packages for building, it should be mentioned to install "lyx" as well or to use the option "WITH_DOC_BUILD=0" (this is mentioned in section "Ubuntu 8.04 LTS" but isn't quite obvious in newer versions)</div>SiddharthPaliwal
