To build an RPM package for ASCEND, you should first make sure you can [[Building_ASCEND|build 'normal' ASCEND]]. Then, follow these steps. You can have a look at the .spec file {{src|ascend.spec}} first, if you like.

* Check out the ASCEND sources in the usual way using Subversion.
* Ensure that you have the [[prerequisites for Linux]] installed, including the SUNDIALS RPM from our [[supporting RPMs]] page.
* Ensure that you are set up for building RPMs as a non-root user. This means creating a file <tt>~/.rpmmacros</tt> and setting up some directories.
* Ensure you have 'fedora_version' (or some other distro version) named in your <tt>~/.rpmmacros</tt> file.
* If necessary, edit <tt>SConstruct</tt> with the version number you want to release
* <tt>scons dist</tt> (this will create a tarball in the <tt>dist</tt> subdirectory)
* <tt>rpmbuild -ta dist/ascend-NNNNN.tar.bz2</tt>

You should now have an RPM version of ASCEND in your RPMS directory (as defined by your <tt>~/.rpmmacros</tt> file).

Shown below is my <tt>~/.rpmmacros</tt> file from Fedora Core 9.
